Vancouver Canucks Acquire Filip Hronek

Don’t tell the Canucks they’re trying to tank! It’s a re-tool damn! Anywho… Vancouver continues to be weird and pulled what is maybe the strangest deal of NHL trade deadline season. Filip Hronek is on his way to Vancouver after the Canucks have agreed to a trade with Detroit.

BOTH teams reported the deal right away in total lockstep. Same exact time stamp too.

Where do I even start? When will the trades end? This is madness! This is March!

Fascinating stuff right here. For starters, the Wings just got an extension hammered out with homegrown star, Dylan Larkin. Once that happened, it felt like anything was on the table for Detroit. The Wings may have found an opportunity to keep their core in tact while selling high on a player that was having a career season.

Hronek, 25, has 38 points in 60 games which already matches his total from a year ago. Hronek has cooled off as of late but that’s only because he’s been playing with cancer, Ben Chiarot. Still, the Wings were able to secure a first round pick for Hronek when that likely wouldn’t have been the case a year ago. His stock has been on the rise and his player card indicates just that.

Detroit basically receives the pick the Canucks got for Bo Horvat. That Islanders pick could be pretty high up in the draft. Would you swap Horvat for Hronek? I don’t think I would but I guess you can make the argument given the fact that there is more control. Hronek is under contract through next year and carries a $4.4 million AAV. Vancouver also need defense help in the worst way. Outside of Quinn Hughes, it’s a total wasteland on the blue line.
