Drake Curse Continues After Jake Paul Loss

Jake Paul is no longer undefeated as a boxer. The loud-mouthed YouTuber and former Disney channel star lost a split decision contest to Tommy Fury on Sunday, the younger brother of heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.

Paul seems to be taking the loss in stride, though he’s jokingly blaming the reason for his defeat on the “Drake curse.”

In a post-fight interview, Paul said, “F–k. This is Drake’s fault,” and “Drake, bro, why did you do this to me?”

An avid gambler, Drake publicly makes large bets on sporting events and individuals often. Right before Paul and Fury faced off, Drake wagered $400,000 on Paul to win by knockout.

While Paul simply got outclassed by Fury, he is the most recent name attached to the Drake curse. Other names include Serena Williams, Conor McGregor, Johnny Manziel, Anthony Joshua, and now, Paul.

A $400,000 loss is nothing for the king of Toronto. Yet it is undeniable that Drake continues to bet on the wrong person or team more often than not.

Drake/Stake Partnership

Drake’s sports betting habits and making headlines for it is nothing new. The artist’s partnership with the online casino and sports betting company Stake, has only accelerated that.

The brand’s popularity has certainly risen since becoming affiliated with Drake, partly because the already popular theory of the rapper’s curse is now attached to the company. Every time Drake posts a screenshot of a sports wager, it is through Stake.

If Paul had been able to knockout Fury, Drizzy would have made a $1 million profit on his wager. This loss may make Drake consider sticking to online roulette, where he seems to be more profitable than sports betting.

A Breath of Fresh Air for the Combat Sports World

Critics of Paul have long been calling for the YouTuber turned boxer to fight someone who is not a retired UFC fighter.

Paul has been calling out boxer Tommy Fury to fight for the better part of two years. All of that trash talking culminated in Paul receiving his first loss at the hands of Fury on Sunday. The fight clearly displayed the difference between someone who has been boxing their whole life, versus someone who has only boxed for a few years.

Paul has been criticized ruthlessly for picking on retired UFC fighter well past their primes. His first contest with an actual boxer proved that the jump between fighting a retired UFC fighter versus a professional boxer is quite significant. The MMA and combat sports world has awaited the day Jake Paul would finally lose and can now celebrate that fact.
