2023 AL Central Breakout Stars

We’re back with more breakout stars! Just as we did for the AL East, it’s time to examine potential X-Factor players that could change the outcome of the division. The AL Central is usually a poo poo platter for the other AL playoff teams to beat up on. However, while that’s probably still true in 2023, maybe this new wave of young players can turn the tables. Let’s get right to it.

Chicago White Sox: Garrett Crochet

I love Garrett Crochet. The former 11th overall pick by Chicago in 2020 is going to be a dominant reliever for as long as he desires. 6-foot-6 power left that throws pure gas. It’s only a three pitch mix but with his extension and velocity, I don’t know how anybody hits him. 2023 is the year when the casuals find out that Crochet is filthy. The real ones already know.

Cleveland Guardians: Óscar González

We saw a bit of González during the Guardians postseason run a year ago. 2023 feels like the year where he really supplants himself as a regular. A big bump in the power numbers is something I expect. After 11 homers in 91 games last year, would anyone be surprised if the Guardians outfielder pops 30 this year?

Detroit Tigers: Spencer Torkelson

I’m not convinced that Torkelson is going to make it but we’re still talking about a former number one overall pick. After a year of being a -1.3 WAR player, there’s only room to go up, right? This is someone that’s been able to hit in the past with power. If the Tigers are going to take a step forward, this one has to go Detroit’s way.

Kansas City Royals: Bobby Witt Jr.

This one might be cheating but it’s the only obvious answer on the Royals roster. It was a successful rookie season for Witt but 2023 just might be the year he becomes a household name. Just needs to hit better this upcoming year. The speed and fielding prowess are already there. Still 20 homers, 80 RBIs, and 30 steals as a rookie is no joke. Expect an even better season for the Royals shortstop.

Minnesota Twins: Nick Gordon

Did the Twins get rid of Luis Arraez for a reason? With Carlos Correa returning, the door is wide open for Nick Gordon to take hold of that second base job. Well, Jorge Polanco is still there but you get the point. Gordon should be a jack of all trades for Minnesota in 2023. Can even play some outfield. The son of Tom Gordon is heading into his third MLB season and took a big leap between year one and two. This could be the year where Gordon establishes himself as one of the premier utility guys in the league.
