Grading The Dmitry Orlov Trade

Dmitry Orlov Now Is A Bruin

In case you missed it, Dmitry Orlov got traded to the Bruins. Boston also acquired Garnet Hathaway in a big time swing. You can say whatever you want about them right now. Winning at a historic pace. The nailed-on favorite to win it all right now. And also a heck of a lot better. Regardless of extension, adding Orlov to that blue line easily makes them one of the best in hockey if they weren’t already. As well, adding Hathaway is a sneaky good move by Don Sweeney. He will do wonders in the bottom-six and plays with an edge that is made for the postseason.

You can’t also discount the Caps here too. They got a very nice amount of picks for two expiring guys who likely would have walked this Summer. While some may argue I’m wrong, it just seems like the race for Wild Card spots in the East is too far to climb. Alex Ovechkin just returned to DC following a four game absence with the passing of his father. Never say never, but this has been coming in Washington. Ever since winning it all in 2018, they have failed to even win a playoff series. Retooling the group while Ovi chases Gretzky’s record might be the best thing for all parties involved. Now it’s time for the grades.

Boston: A-

I really like this deal for the Bruins. My only issue is the ability to potentially make more deals down the road if they choose. While the draft capital is pretty much dried up, they could dip into the prospect pool if they so choose. However, they might not really have to. Orlov improves that backline a heck of a lot. Hathaway is a type of guy every team in hockey wants. Even better news if you end up extending one or both of them. Having the deals expire is also not the worst thing since David Pastrnak needs a new deal. Regardless of their status, Boston paid a fair price for one of the best defensemen not named Jakob Chychrun available on the trade market. They also shored up their forward group with a gem of a fourth liner in Hathaway. The Bruins are firing on all cylinders right now and I predict that both Orlov and Hathaway fit in just fine in Beantown.

Capitals: B

As I said earlier, I like this trade for Washington. They add three picks in the first three rounds to replenish their asset pool. However, this is pretty much giving on this season in my eyes. I think it’s safe to say that if Ovi keeps playing, they’ll keep trying to make the playoffs year in and year out. This isn’t gonna be the Washington Wizards when Michael Jordan was in town. Picking up an expiring in Craig Smith as well could really help them figure out how to replace Orlov and upgrade this Summer. If the Blues are in the mix for Timo Meier, then why can’t Washington sniff around for Chychrun? Retooling on the fly could just become the new trend people.

I’m not gonna grade the Wild because once again they middle-manned a deal. Obviously, they did well for grabbing assets but at least 25 other GMs could have picked up the phone and did the same thing. Bruins fans, however, should be really happy. Rather than letting them down, the front office has found a way to upgrade the team in stealthy fashion. Dmitry Orlov is not a name that takes the headlines, but he is one of the most consistent second-pairing defensemen around.
