Bruins have traded for defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway for picks, money, and players from the Bruins. The Bruins beef up their roster to attempt to grasp a Stanley Cup during historic season. Via David Pagnotta.
Official trade details are out. Washington will receive center Craig Smith, a 2023 1st-round pick, 2025 second-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, and the Capitals will retain 50% of Orlov’s contract. Boston will receive Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway. The Minnesota Wild have also been added into this deal to become a 3-team trade. Minnesota will retain 25% of Orlov’s contract, receive a 2023 5th-round pick, and obtain forward Andrei Svetlakov.
In this season, Orlov has posted three goals and 16 assists for 19 total points in 43 games played. Orlov has been a great defenseman for the Capitals in his 11 year career. He will certainly be the final piece for the Bruins championship hopeful roster. Hathaway has been a decent player for the Capitals this season as he has posted 16 points with nine goals and seven assists. He will be a good depth addition for the Bruins during their cup run.
Overall, one thing that comes to mind when seeing this trade is that the rich get richer. The Bruins add one great top tier defenseman in Orlov and forward depth with Hathaway while only giving up a few picks and a player. It will be interesting to see if the boys in Boston can top off this amazing season with a cup. As of right now, I and the rest of the hockey community can most likely say that the Bruins may have just won the cup with this trade.
