The Arizona Cardinals just re-signed the man in charge of putting together their roster, Steve Keim. With head coach Bruce Arians retired, now Steve Wilks is the head honcho with the red birds. Team owner Michael Bidwell knows that finding a quarterback is imperative for the franchise heading into the new era for Arizona.
“The quarterback thing will come. I don’t want to sound like we’re being cavalier about it but we’ve got to wait for free agency to start to see who is out there,” Bidwill told KMVP-FM on Tuesday morning, per the team’s official website. “I know we’re going to be aggressive, we’re going to have a plan.”
Carson Palmer has retired and left the franchise with a black hole at quarterback. Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton clearly aren’t long-term answers either. Arizona made the NFC Championship Game two years ago but took a big step back missing the playoffs altogether in 2017. With Keim locked up through the 2022 season, it looks like they are giving him plenty of time to find a face of the franchise.
Arizona will have some options to snag a quarterback right away in free agency. Kirk Cousins, Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum, and Sam Bradford are just some of those options. Arizona has some options if they go the NFL Draft route. The Cardinals have the 15th pick in the NFL and could consider one of the prospects in the draft. Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson, and Mason Rudolph. The Cardinals wanted to draft Patrick Mahomes a year ago but the Chiefs traded up ahead of Arizona in the 2017 draft.
Alex Smith has already been sent to Washington in what figures to be a crazy quarterback market in 2018. As of now, it’s unclear who the top target is for Arizona.
