An Auburn student, Craig Noyes, has won a new Toyota after absolutely sinking a 94-foot, full-court putt in front of a sold-out crowd at Neville Arena on Saturday.
The pressure! A new car on the line, all your friends watching behind you and a sold-out crowd behind you. Not to mention his school, the Auburn Tigers, were in the middle of playing their biggest rival No. 3 Alabama!
The crowd exploded. How could you not? It doesn’t get much better than this.
Noyes is a sophomore at Auburn and works for the student-run newspaper, The Auburn Plainsman.
“Honestly, my main goal was just not to whiff or shank it into the bench,” Noyes said to AP after the shot. “It was so loud when I stepped up to the ball. Once I hit it, I completely zoned out. I couldn’t hear anyone. It wasn’t until the announcer put a hand on my shoulder and said I’d won a car that I believed it.”
Noyes told also told AP he did not own a car before this contest. He was selected at random for the putt.
Luckily for Noyes and some friends, they decided to spend the night camping out in front of the stadium in order to get the best seats for Auburn’s matchup against the Crimson Tide.
Noyes says he is not even a golfer. He was entirely confident when he stepped up to the ball on the biggest stage. The student spent no wasted time, smacking the perfect putt before he could even be properly introduced to the crowd.
Unfortunately for Auburn, the student’s heroics somehow did not motivate them to upset their rivals. Auburn fell to Alabama, 77-69. The Crimson Tide remain undefeated in SEC play.
Alabama was not the biggest winner of the day, though. That title belongs to Noyes.
