Kyrie Irving Felt ‘Disrespected’ At Times with Nets
Kyrie Irving made his first media appearance Tuesday after being traded to the Dallas Mavericks from the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, Feb. 5. Irving said he felt “disrespected” during some of his time with Brooklyn.
Irving talked about his time with Brooklyn, the media amongst other things.
“I just know I want to be places where I’m celebrated and not just tolerated. Or even just dealt with in a way that doesn’t make me feel respected. There were times throughout this process when I was in Brooklyn when I felt very disrespected. And my talent… no one ever talks about my work ethic though. They talk about off the floor. I just want to change the narrative and tell my own story,” Irving said.
Irving made sure to get this point off of his brain early — this was the first thing he said to the Dallas media, other than the fact that he’s grateful for this opportunity.
The Mavericks guard went on to talk about how he grew up a New Jersey Nets fan and wanted to bring a championship to Brooklyn, with Kevin Durant.
“When things start to change is when you’re not getting transparency from the front office, or people around you,” Irving said.
Later in the interview, questions about Kyrie’s suspension earlier this season arose.
Kyrie Irving was suspended after promoting a 2018 movie called Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America on social media. The film was heavily criticized for being filled with antisemitic messages. Initially, he didn’t back down from his promotion of the movie, though, eventually, Irving apologized.
“I did it [apologized] because I care about my family and I have Jewish members of my family that care for me deeply,” Irving said. “Did the media know that beforehand when they called me the word ‘antisemitic?’ No. Did they know anything about my family? No. everything was assumed. Everything was put out before I had anything to say and I reacted instead of responding maturely.”
Irving has always been known for ripping on the media, and nothing changed Tuesday. I really hope he has put all the controversies behind him. Genuinely, I would love to see him win a championship for Dallas.
In any event, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in the same backcourt is instantly something all 29 other NBA teams fear when they play Dallas. I mean, how do you stop that?!
