Leeds United Sack Manager Jesse Marsch

Leeds United sacked their manager Jesse Marsch Tuesday morning, per a statement by the club.

The firing of Marsch came a day after Leeds lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in a battle between relegation rivals. Following the loss, Leeds sit in 17th place and out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

It is no surprise that Marsch was sacked as Leeds has not won any of their last seven Premier League matches going back to the start of November. Their last league win was a 4-3 thriller against Bournemouth in which the young stars stepped up for Marsch at a time when a loss would have sent him packing.

Marsch was hired by Leeds in Feb. 2022 to replace the departing Marcelo Bielsa. After less than a year, Marsch and his backroom staff will be leaving the club.

It should be noted that when Marsch took over for Bielsa Leeds looked destined for relegation. However, the American manager steadied the ship and saved the day for Leeds, ultimately keeping them up on the final day.

Unfortunately, when you look at the stats it tells a very different story. In his 37 matches in charge, Marsch only won 11 times, a winning percentage of 29.7%. For anyone wondering, that is not good. According to LUFCDATA, Marsch’s 25% Premier League win percentage is the second lowest by any Leeds manager in the club’s history.

The concern is that Leeds went out and bought a load of players that Marsch wanted and had previously managed. Now, they do not have Marsch and are in desperate need of a win. Will the players be able to rally around whoever is brought in as the new manager?

The search for a new manager is already underway. The names that Leeds fans are mentioning are former manager Marcelo Bielsa (not happening), former Tottenham and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, and West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberán.

Corberán would be the best fit as Marsch’s replacement. He has a history at Leeds where he managed the U-23 side from 2017 to 2020 and was an assistant coach to Bielsa.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds appoints a new manager before they face Manchester United twice in five days. First, the two rivals play on Wednesday in Manchester, before returning to play at Leeds on Sunday.
