With extension available, Eagles look to keep Hurts under contract

Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are looking to discuss a contract extension this offseason, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

After leading his team to an impressive 14-3 regular season record, the No. 1 seed in the NFC and a Super Bowl berth, the Philadelphia Eagles will look to give Hurts an arm and a leg this offseason.

After uncertainty loomed over the Eagles franchise this season, Hurts took it personal. The Eagles weren’t sure about him long-term when it came to their future. Could they rely on dual-threat quarterback from Oklahoma and Alabama?

He was viewed as the underdog again and boy, did Hurts silence the haters. This season, Hurts was an MVP candidate, posting 22 passing touchdowns and 13 rushing touchdowns in the regular season. He also had only six interceptions.

With the market price for quarterbacks only increasing, we will see an enticing offer from the Eagles possibly this offseason. Hurts will definitely get paid, but the question is how much will he?

The Eagles recently moved on from former second overall pick Carson Wentz before he got a massive extension for $32 million a year. Philadelphia managed to trade Wentz for a first and third-round pick in 2021. Safe to say that deal didn’t work out for the birds.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts was taken as the 53rd overall pick. He was the fifth quarterback selected in that draft, falling behind Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert and Jordan Love, who were all taken in the first round.

Recently, the NFL bumped up their salary cap to $224.8 million recently, according to Rapoport. It’s a $16 million difference from $208.2 million in 2022. This news could benefit both Hurts and Philadelphia as they get some more wiggle-room for the 24-year-old’s contract.
