Netflix trailer for ‘Bill Russell: Legend’ documentary released

Netflix announced last February that they will be producing a documentary regarding Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell. The one-minute, 46-second long trailer for the documentary for the film, which is scheduled to premiere on Feb. 8, was released Wednesday.

The trailer features the appearances of a bevy of current and former NBA stars, beginning with Chris Paul, Larry Bird, Isaiah Thomas, Jerry West, Magic Johnson and Kenny Smith. The documentary will be produced by Sam Pollard with producers, Ross Greenburg, Mike Richardson and Larry Gordon.

Here is the synopsis of the documentary, per the Netflix website.

“The definitive bio-doc on NBA Legend Bill Russell, the greatest champion in the history of American sports, and a true Civil Rights icon. From the humblest of beginnings, Russell went on to lead each and every one of his basketball teams to Championships — two California State High School Championships, two back-to-back NCAA titles, a Gold Medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and 11 championship titles in his thirteen-year career as a Boston Celtic (his last two as the first Black Head Coach in NBA history, while still playing for the Celtics). Bill’s story is innately and uniquely intertwined with the 75-year history of the NBA, and the story of America’s last 8 decades.”

Russell’s documentary — which looks like it will be very good, based on the trailer — comes two years after the release of “The Last Dance,” a Michael Jordan-centered mini-series that detailed not only Jordan’s career. Though it also detailed the Chicago Bulls’ journey throughout their six titles in the 1990s and the downfall between the organizational core from owner Jerry Reinsdorf, general manager Jerry Krause, head coach Phil Jackson, Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.

Other notable sports documentaries to preview on Netflix were “The Redeem Team,” “Basketball or Nothing,” and “Break Point.”

If any athlete deserves a documentary, it’s Russell. He’s the only player in NBA History to have his No. 6 number retired leaguewide and is widely considered one of the most successful and legendary figures in American sports history. His on- and off-court contributions were unprecedented, winning 11 NBA Titles with the Boston Celtics as a player and coach as well as being front-and-center for social justice in the 1950s and 1960s. He passed away at the age of 88 on July 31, 2022.
