Boston Scott, The Giant Slayer

Boston Scott, The Giant Slayer

The New York Giants defeated Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time, in the Super Bowl twice. It’s no small task to defeat Brady on such a stage, and one that the Giants did two different times. For some reason in the playoffs, the Giants have his number. But now, it seems the Giants are getting a taste of their own medicine, though the player that’s been haunting their franchise for the past few years may come as a surprise to you. Meet Boston Scott.

Yes, you heard me right. Scott, the little 5-foot-6, 203-pound running back, has been an absolute nightmare for the Giants and it really makes no sense as to why. To put it into perspective, 34% of his rushing yards, 43% of his receiving yards and 59% of his touchdown have all come against the Giants.

But despite the prevalence of these facts, the Giants weren’t ready to accept the narrative that Scott was a Giant slayer. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale had this to say about Scott.

“If it predates my time here, I can’t answer that,” Martindale said. “He’s a good running back. They’ve got a stable of good running backs. Just because he scored, I don’t think he’s a Giant-killer.

Making the comment even funnier is the fact that Scott had a rushing touchdown in each of their two regular season games. He had three total rushing scores on the season. And he kept the narrative going in the playoffs by punching in another touchdown against his favorite opponent.

So, to recap, in the three games Scott has played against the Giants he rushed for three touchdowns. Out of his four total rushing touchdowns throughout the 2022 season and playoffs, three came against the Giants.

In all honesty, I have no clue why Scott does so well against the Giants. Playing any other team, he is just another backup relieving Miles Sanders. But for whatever reason when he faces the Giants, he turns into prime Barry Sanders and becomes impossible to stop.

Scott himself can’t even really explain his success against the G-Men.

“Opportunity, I guess,” Scott said.

Whatever the true reason may be for Scott’s success, I know that Eagles fans surely aren’t complaining. The only question now becomes if the Eagles can get him to channel this ability against the rest of the league.

We’ve seen great players dominate teams before. But that’s the thing, it’s usually the cream of the crop, not a 5-foot-6 career backup running back. I know one thing though, if you mention the name Boston Scott to a Giants fan, you are sure to trigger a PTSD flashback.
