‘Callisto Protocol’ Sequel Reportedly in Doubt

The new survival horror game ‘Callisto Protocol,’ developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton, has reportedly failed to meet sales and ratings expectations, with the possibility of a sequel in jeopardy.

Poor Sales and Reviews

Slated to be a new “AAAA” title, ‘Callisto Protocol’ was promised to bring a level of quality unmatched by any “AAA” title on the market. However, since release on Dec. 2, 2022, that supposed quality has failed to impress shoppers and critics alike. With Krafton’s expected sales figure of five million units being met with less than two million actual purchases at the beginning of 2023.

As for the critical response the reviews have largely been average, with Metacritic’s PlayStation 5 reviews being a 69/100 for critics and a 6.8/10 for users. Similar reviews were made on IGN, GameSpot, and other reviewing sites, with some of the biggest complaints being of stuttering and performance issues.

Falling Stocks

The failure for ‘Callisto Protocol’ to meet expectations has caused several financial companies like Samsung Securities to lower their target stock prices as a result, according to Pushsquare.com. And with a reported $162 million budget, the second most expensive video game of all time as of 2023, the possibility of a sequel being released is growing more and more unlikely.

‘Callisto Protocol’s’ Future

While a sequel to ‘Callisto Protocol’ hasn’t been confirmed or canceled, there are still plans to continue work on the game. Krafton reportedly intends on trying to lessen the blow from the lowered stock price by continuing to support the game, with plans for DLCs, updates, new modes, and more all on the table.

Whether this is enough to raise game sales to Krafton’s new expectation of two million within 2023 is unknown.
