Texans general manager Nick Caserio delivered some good news regarding the recovery of rookie wide receiver John Metchie III, saying that he is making “massive strides” in his recovery. He even made the optimistic claim that Metchie could be back with his teammates full-time as soon as April.
The Texans wide receiver missed his entire rookie year after his diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) in July. However, Caserio believes he will be ready for the start of their offseason program and isn’t worried of the receiver’s capabilities.
“He actually looks better now than he did when we drafted him in the spring,” Caserio said. “He’s improved his strength, he’s improved his lower body strength. His attitude has been great, even though he’s been dealing with a lot of things medically.”
Their program can begin as soon as April 3 due to the recent firing of head coach Lovie Smith.
Metchie was chosen in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft at 44th overall after his impressive junior year with Alabama. In his last season with the Crimson Tide, he caught 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. However, he also tore his ACL in the 2021 SEC Championship game, but the knee injury wasn’t expected to be an issue.
The receiver is known for his polished route running and great route instincts, which counteract his average speed and lack of explosiveness. He is not the biggest receiver; however, Metchie has shown an element of toughness that adds a dangerous outcome to his game especially when it comes to yards after catch.
The 2023 year could not come sooner for the young prospect as a potential reunion with former Alabama teammate Bryce Young could come into play. It will be exciting to see John Metchie III in action at the pro level, strongly hoping for his start to come in this next season.
