Why was ex-Manchester City Player Adam Johnson in Prison?

Athletes around the world sometimes find themselves in jail. Very few are more deserving of prison time than former Manchester City and England winger Adam Johnson.

Johnson was arrested back in 2015 and sentenced to six years in jail the following year. In 2016, he was found guilty of sexual activity with a minor as well as grooming a child. Along with those charges, he was found guilty of another offense of sexual activity with a minor but found not guilty on a second count of the same crime.

The incidents happened while Johnson was playing for Sunderland. He used his fame to draw in a 15-year-old schoolgirl, whom he was found guilty of kissing.

Following his initial arrest in 2015, Johnson played in over two dozen matches for the North-English side. He was dropped from the team on Feb. 11, 2016, before being officially sentenced on March 24. Along with being dropped by Sunderland, Johnson was dropped by Adidas.

Despite being sentenced to six years in prison, which would have seen him jailed until 2022, Johnson was released in 2019. Following his release, he posted a statement stating he “deeply regrets” his actions, according to The Guardian.

“[I] would like to take this opportunity to publicly express my remorse for my actions” that “led to my conviction and imprisonment,” Johnson said. “I am very sorry for the effect my conduct had on those directly and indirectly involved. It should never have happened, and I deeply regret what I did.”

Since his release, Johnson has not returned to football and likely never will. He is now 35 years old and well past any prime he had.

Before his arrest, he played in 308 matches for five clubs from 2004-16. Johnson had notable stints at Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Sunderland. In his club career, he scored 48 goals.

He also was a member of the English national team. From 2010 to 2012 he earned 12 caps that were initially going to be revoked but ultimately were not. For England, he tallied two goals.
