Barcelona President Joan Laporta: European Super League is needed to stop Premier League

Barcelona president Joan Laporta called for UEFA to support the European Super League if there is any hope of stopping the Premier League from taking over and becoming the lone powerhouse in Europe.

The worry about the Premier League is a fair one. According to an ESPN article on the news, the EPL will be up to €7 billion in television rights in 2023. That figure triples the €2 billion that La Liga currently makes from selling their television rights.

“European football needs to change the way it works,” Laporta said in an interview with Barca TV. “It is increasingly harder to compete with the clubs in the Premier League. We have the strength to do so but we are finding it harder and harder to find the resources.”

UEFA has been against the idea of the Super League so far, but an official and final decision is expected to be announced in 2023. There is still a possibility that UEFA changes its mind and allows the European Super League to take place.

The Super League was founded in April 2021, but only three of the initial 12 founding members remain a part of it — Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus. 

Barcelona and Juventus both need the Super League to happen due to their financial difficulties. The Spanish giants have been hit with financial fair play punishments. Juventus, on the other hand, has suffered a £220 million loss and is under investigation by UEFA.

It seems that the Super League is inevitable and will happen at some point. There is just too much money for the owners to keep denying it, even if the fans are against the idea. For it to happen though, UEFA will need to side with Europe’s big clubs.
