Michael Conforto has a new home

Michael Conforto is on the move. The former Mets outfielder has agreed to a two-year, $36 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. Not exactly the greatest consolation prize for Giants fans that had their hopes up for Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa.

As well, $18 million is a lot for a guy whose last full season in baseball had a slash line of .232/.344/.384. It’s clear that San Francisco is betting on the upside of Conforto, a former All-Star whose 162-game career average is 28 home runs, 85 RBIs and a .255 batting average. At his best, he’s a pretty nice left-handed bat to have in the middle of your lineup. At his worse, however, he’s inconsistent and injury prone.

Better Than Nothing?

As previously mentioned, the Giants had big ambitions heading into the Winter. They ended up in second place for the Judge sweepstakes, with the Yankees ultimately paying up at the eleventh hour.

However, the Correa saga is arguably even worse. The two sides agreed to terms, and he was a medical away from bolstering the San Francisco lineup. However, that medical brought up information that the front office and agent Scott Boras had differing opinions of. They ultimately pulled out of the deal, which allowed the New York Mets to swoop in under everyone’s noses and sign a 12-year, $315 million contract.

All of that brings us to Conforto. A guy who, at this point in his career, is definitely not a needle mover, especially when you consider the way the Dodgers and Padres are built right now.

From a Mets point of view, there was simply no way you could bring him back. Steve Cohen has spent an absolutely silly amount of money this offseason. Yes, he probably would be a better option in left field than Mark Canha, but the goal now is shaving salary off the payroll, not growing it even larger. The Mets did that after trading James McCann to the Orioles.

It’s been a tough offseason in San Francisco, missing out on the two biggest names in free agency, losing your ace in Carlos Rodon to the Yankees, and all you have to show for it is Michael Conforto. However, don’t feel too bad for Giants fans. Maybe a third-place finish in the division is just what the doctor ordered.
