Tyrell Terry Retires From Basketball

Bill Simmons essentially creamed himself when Tyrell Terry was drafted by the Mavericks in 2020 NBA Draft. It was a parade of supporters at The Ringer for the Tyrell Terry fan club.

One year later, Terry was cut by the Mavericks. The year after that, waived by the Grizzlies after not re-upping the original two-way deal. Enter present day. The day of December 15th, 2022. That marks the day Tyrell Terry quit playing basketball.

The former Stanford point guard announced his retirement via Instagram:

“While I have achieved amazing accomplishments, created unforgettable memories, and made lifelong friends,” the 22-year-old wrote, in part, on Instagram. “I’ve also experienced the darkest times of my life. To the point where instead of building me up, it began to destroy me. Where I began to despise and question the value of myself, much more than those surrounding me could ever see or know. Intrusive thoughts, waking up nauseous, and finding myself struggling to take normal breaths because of the rock that would sit on my chest that seemed to weigh more than I could carry.

“This is just a brief description of the anxiety this sport has caused me, and while I’m grateful for every door it has opened for me, I can’t continue this fight any longer for something I have fallen out of love with.”

Terry went unsigned this year and if there was ever a chance that he was going to resurrect his career, it would have started by playing overseas. He’s for sure done now. Terry was at his best with Stanford averaging 14.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists his lone season with the Cardinal.
