The words you are about to hear come from a man (Chaim Bloom) that knows he’s on the hot seat. The Red Sox have nobody to blame but themselves for losing Xander Bogaerts. It started with their insulting Spring Training offer which opened the door for the best shortstop in franchise history to hit the open market. It only takes one bone headed team in free agency to cause chaos and that’s exactly what happened.
Bogaerts is leaving Boston and heading to San Diego after signing an 11-year deal with the Padres. It’s a record contract in terms of length ever handed out by a player 30 or older.
Two things can be true:
A: The Red Sox only have themselves to blame.
B: The contract San Diego just handed out is a brain dead move that’s not going to age well.
Nevertheless, the positive here is that Chaim Bloom acknowledged that the fans are going to be hurt by this one. Turns out he might not be a robot after all.
“I expect fans will be hurt,” Bloom said, according to the Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. “I fully expect that, and I also expect that we’re going to put this together and deliver them winning baseball. It’s gonna look a little different than it would have with Xander. But it’s going to happen and it’s on us to show them. That’s our job. Thanks for sharing.”
“Everybody is sad that he’s not going to be a part of the organization,” Bloom said, via McWilliams. “We’re incredibly grateful for him. For everything he’s accomplished here and what he helped this organization accomplish.”
Those are the words of a man that knows he’s in trouble. There is only one way to save it and that starts / ends with Carlos Correa. If Bloom doesn’t replace Bogaerts with another elite option at the position, Bloom will lose his job. Boston is going to be under the microscope after losing Bogaerts and it’s time they prove they’re a big market club.
