Mitch Haniger Signs Three-Year Deal With The San Francisco Giants

This can be considered the busiest Winter Meetings we have seen in quite a while. The signings keep coming, as the San Francisco Giants have signed Mitch Haniger from the Seattle Mariners. Ken Rosenthal broke the news just minutes ago. He announced Haniger will be signing a three-year deal worth $43.5M.

This deal comes on the heels of the botched announcement by Jon Heyman where he put out a tweet, which has since been deleted, that Aaron Judge would be going to the Giants. Some might think that their signing an outfielder would put a damper on that, but Rosenthal believes otherwise.

If this is to be believed, San Francisco is going all in this off-season to make a run at another World Series berth, which would be their first since 2014. Mitch Haniger was signed from the Seattle Mariners where he spent the last five seasons after being included in a 2016 trade for Jean Segura. Haniger is more known for his defensive skills than at the plate, where he has a career fielding percentage of .989% compared to a .261 batting average. His best year in Seattle was 2018 when he was voted an All-Star and posted career highs all over the board and finished 9th in WAR at 6.5.

The question that comes to mind is the fit in San Francisco. If the rumors that San Francisco wants to add Aaron Judge to this free agency haul with Mitch Haniger, you can’t have two guys playing Right Field. With Joc Pederson in left, the idea would likely be that Judge plays Center Field. He has plenty of experience, albeit in a smaller field, playing center during his time in New York, but I am sure they would shuffle guys around. Either way, this won’t be an under-the-radar signing during what has been a hectic MLB Winter Meetings.
