Booger McFarland Makes it Awkward After Zach Wilson Take

Things got awkward during “Monday Night Football Countdown,” on ESPN before the Cardinals took on the 49ers. Analyst Booger McFarland ripped into Jets quarterback Zach Wilson over his press conference following the 12-3 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

McFarland said Wilson hasn’t had to accept accountability because he “grew up with a lot of money.” His uncle, David Neeleman, is the founder of JetBlue, but that excuse didn’t go over well and caused awkward tension between Mcfarland and Hall of Famer Steve Young.

Steve Young took issue with Booger McFarland saying Zach Wilson "grew up with a lot of money" and hasn't "had to accept accountability."

McFarland couldn’t even finish his ridiculous take before Young cut him off. “That doesn’t resonate at all,” Young said. “He’s a tough-minded kid.” At the same time, you can see clear discomfort in the face of former quarterback Robert Griffen III.

What Wilson said during his press conference was pretty bad. If you go 9-for-22 with only 77 yards, you have to take some accountability, especially when your defense only allows three points for most of the game. But to say it’s because of the way he grew up is just asking for attention, and giving up on Wilson this early would be idiotic.

The Jets aren’t in a position to have a deep playoff run, and they didn’t draft Wilson second overall to bench him for Joe Flacco.

It’s not about how he grew up, but Wilson is definitely lacking accountability and leadership. When you perform that badly and your defense locks it down, you can’t say you’re not to blame. This is where someone like head coach Robert Saleh needs to step in. Wilson is your quarterback of the future, or else you wouldn’t have drafted him second overall.

It doesn’t matter if they’re rookies or 10-year veterans. Accountability is one of those things you need to have if you’re going to be a leader. Bears quarterback Justin Fields recently owned up to their loss to the Falcons.

Remember back in October when these Jets beat Josh Allen and the Bills? This is what Allen said after that loss.

You can clearly see the difference here. Wilson shouldn’t be benched or cut, but badly needs some good coaching. And say he really can’t figure it out and you let him go, then general manager Joe Douglas has to go for wasting the second overall pick on him.
