MacKenzie Weegar, Flames Agree To Contract Extension

Give Brad Treliving the GM of the year award already. Nobody has topped what he has done this offseason turning lemons into lemonade. Treliving has now found a way to keep Johnathan Huberdeau and now MacKenzie Weegar following the Matthew Tkachuk trade.

Weegar and the Flames have agreed to an 8-year extension worth around $50 million. Elliotte Friedman of SportsNet was the first to report the news:

A $6.25 Million (or around that mark) for Weegar seems like a great buy. Especially with the news that the cap is going up very soon. I already have a blog post written on this that Weegar probably could have done much better on the open market had he just kept doing what he has been doing. Weegar is one of the most underrated defensemen in the entire league. No question about it.

I like Weegar as a fantasy option for fantasy as well. The Andersson and Hanifin combo works but Weegar really deserves a shot to carry the top-end load. Weegar is projected to be on the top line with Chris Tanev to open up the 2022-23 season.

Could have gotten way more, MacKenzie Weegar. Way more. Your agent did you dirty.

Does anybody know what to expect from this Flames team? Weegar joins a damn talented D core that includes Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Chris Tanev, and Oliver Kylington. The Flames might end up being very dangerous again. The biggest props have to go to Treliving who someone kept this team competitive when he was dealt a bad hand to start things off.
