Angels and Ohtani agree to a record-breaking Arbitration contract

The Los Angeles Angels and Shohei Ohtani have just agreed on a 1 year, 30 million dollar contract. They did this to avoid arbitration. This deal is the largest salary ever for an arbitration-eligible player. This deal will allow Ohtani to stay on the Angels for at least one more season. At the end of the 2023 season, he becomes a free agent.

The record was previously held by Mookie Betts. The Red Sox signed him to a 1 year, 27 million dollar deal in a similar fashion.

This year in 27 starts, Ohtani has a record of 15-8 to pair with a stellar 2.35 ERA, along with 213 strikeouts. He’s done all this while only holding opposing batters to a .207 batting average. And, of course, we can’t forget the hitting stats. In 152 games as a registered batter, he’s hit 29 doubles, 6 triples, and 34 home runs. He has driven in 94 runs to give him an overall slash line of .276/.359/.529

Overall, in his 5 years with the Angels, he’s registered 62 starts with a 28-13 record. He has had an ERA just below 3 at 2.98 with 435 strikeouts. And on the other side of the plate, he’s scored 324 runs and hit 102 doubles. He’s also hit 21 triples with 127 home runs, while also racking up 341 RBIs. Up to this point, this gives him a career slash line of .268/.355/.535 to give him a career OPS of .890.

It makes sense the Angels would want to avoid the arbitration process and secure Ohtani for at least this season. He’s one of the premier superstars in this league. They dodged one bullet, although they’re still going to have to commit to paying him a lot of money. They’ll do that for a long time if the Los Angeles Angels want to keep the future of their franchise. He is certainly one of the top available free agents come the 2023 off-season.
