Tage Thompson Has Re-Signed With The Sabres

Surprise, Tage Thompson is going nowhere! After a career year, the Sabres and Thompson have agreed to a seven-year, $50 million extension. It is definitely a great bit of news for both team and player. Check out the Sabres’ Twitter:

Thompson had a great year in 2021-2022. The 24-year-old finally seemed to figure it out at the NHL level with 38 goals and 30 assists in 78 games. It’s hard to believe that only a few years ago, he seemed to be going nowhere fast in the Blues’ farm system. Following the Ryan O’Reilly trade and some tough years to begin with, both Thompson and the Sabres are finally seeming to head in the right direction. It’s little surprise that the franchise sees Thompson in very high regard both on and off the ice. Locking up the Arizona native was yet another move in a very eventful offseason for GM Kevyn Adams.

A Ray of Light

Sabres’ fans have been punished for over a decade now. With an inability to put anything resembling a winner on the ice, the team was constantly in the NHL’s cellar and clamoring for the #1 overall pick. However, things finally look to be heading in the right direction in their rebuild. A core is finally developing up there. Along with Thompson, the likes of Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Victor Olofsson, and others are helping the Sabres take the next step towards contention. They are by no means a finished product. However, a layer of optimism and excitement is finally surrounding the team. After so many years of despair and losing, the future in Buffalo is finally starting to look bright.

The same can be said for Thompson. After a shift to center in training camp, his offensive game took some real steps forward. You can argue about whether he’s a bonafide #1 center, but he is absolutely a player all 32 GMs want on their team. Physical, talented, and team oriented. With rumors of Patrick Kane possibly wanting to play for his hometown team, things could get better in the next few years. The Sabres are some depth and goalkeeping away from finally making a playoff push.
