The Seattle Mariners are all in. Jerry Dipoto’s squad hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002 and he’s determined to make sure they get in. The top starter on the market is heading to the Pacific Northwest. While currently sitting in a wildcard spot, Seattle made sure to be aggressive in order to keep their playoff spot.
Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The return here appears strong from the Cincinnati perspective. Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Andrew Moore and Levi Stoudt are also headed to Cincinnati. While you may not be familiar with those names, three out of the four are ranked very high in the Mariners system. The Reds acquired three of the top five prospects in the Seattle farm system. Marte and Arroyo respectively are first and second. Both are ranked inside the top 50 according to Baseball America’s new prospect list.
Castillo, 29, is filthy and fresh off an All-Star appearance. The righty will help Seattle through at least two playoff races. He’s not scheduled to hit free agency until after next season. Castillo has made 14 starts and worked 85 innings, pitching to a 2.86 ERA. Not bad considering his home ballpark is Great American. Castillo hits 97 MPH consistently and does a great job keeping the ball on the ground. In a game that doesn’t feature many elite starters anymore, Seattle just got their hands on one.
The 2022 MLB Trade Deadline just got off to a hot start. Seattle is in total go for it mode. With the addition of Castillo, is Seattle actually a real contender? Mariner fans have reason to believe.
