Kyler Murray’s New Contract Includes a “Homework” Clause
Kyler Murray just got PAID by the Arizona Cardinals, committing him to the Cards for five years and $230 million. Moving past the money, he also got assigned some homework, per a source close to the situation that claimed this was an unprecedented circumstance.
The deal states that he must engage in at least four hours of “Independent Study” every single week of the season, including any postseason games as well. On top of that, time spent in team meetings doesn’t count. For the super detailed description of the contract’s requirements for Murray, you can check it out here, but I don’t want to bore you. Just know that if any part of this section in his contract is breeched, the dual-threat QB’s guaranteed money will likely become not so guaranteed anymore.
Funny enough, in 2021, Kyler Murray said some interesting things about watching film.
“I think I was blessed with the cognitive skills to just go out there and just see it before it happens,” Murray said. “I’m not one of those guys that’s going to sit there and kill himself watching film. I don’t sit there for 24 hours and break down this team and that team and watch every game because, in my head, I see so much.”

Well too bad Kyler, because now you don’t have a choice. You’re going to be on that iPad putting those self-proclaimed cognitive skills to good use.
Now the fact that the Cardinals just signed to an expensive, long-term deal but have included parental instructions for Kyler Murray to do some more studying can’t be a good sign. Clearly, if it’s being mandated in his contract, the man needs to get in the film room a lot more. Considering how badly the team has fallen apart in the second half of the last couple of seasons, you have to think that Murray’s lackadaisical effort could be something that cost them.
If I’m being completely honest though, it seems wild to me that I’m even writing this article. How can you possibly let this get out to the media especially when the Cardinals GM and Coach literally use the same agent as Kyler? This news doesn’t help anyone’s reputation. It’s not a good look for the franchise that they have to micromanage their expensive superstar like he’s a middle schooler not doing his homework. And it’s DEFINITELY not a good look for Kyler. It should be embarrassing that you can’t take your job seriously (which also happens to be a game) and do everything possible to win when you’re getting paid millions to do so with hundreds of thousands counting on you. Hopefully for the Cardinals though, the clause works some magic and gets them a playoff win this year.
