Matchpoint Tennis Championships: Taking A Look At The Male Competitors
It’s been a while since a quality tennis video game has hit the market. However, Matchpoint Tennis Championships recently dropped, and it seems to have broken the streak for poor quality tennis games. In the game, the user can compete with friends through the online option, or locally. In addition, players can face off against the CPU, which is filled with some well-renowned players on the real ATP circuit. As of now, there are a total of 13 men’s players the user can choose from. Although, 2 of these players require to be purchased for gameplay.
Contrary to most sports video games featuring real players, Matchpoint Tennis Championships does not give an overall rating to the players featured. Below, I list and explain the current men’s players who are included in this video game.
1. Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz is the first player available in the game, and he is also the youngest, being 19 years old. Matchpoint Tennis Championships awarded Alcaraz with a 90 forehand rating, which is quite spectacular for a player of his age. Additionally, he offers an 84 backhand rating, an 85 power and fitness rating, 84 serve, and a 79 volley rating. Aside from the volley rating, Alcaraz seems to offer a great overall playstyle for users, and definitely is a strong option for those who want to play mostly from the baseline. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Alcaraz’s ratings soar in the near future as he continues to dominate on the ATP tour. As of now, he has 65 career ATP wins, along with 5 championships in the singles draw.
2. Pablo Carreño Busta
Pablo Carreño Busta is a unique addition to the game, as he isn’t one of the top players on the ATP circuit, but he carries a very well-rounded playstyle, making him a relatively safe option to choose in this game. Matchpoint Tennis Championships gave Busta a 93 fitness, making him one of the top-rated players regarding fitness. He also carries an 89 forehand, an 85 power, and an 84 backhand. The attributes combine for a slightly above-average player to use at the baseline. In addition, Busta has an 83 serve paired with an 80 volley, putting him at an about average serve and volley type of player. Busta boasts an excellent fitness rating, but his other attributes are quite average.
3. Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz’s attributes kind of shocked me, as they were very high for a player who hasn’t really won many championships on the tour as of yet. Matchpoint awarded him a 90 forehand and serve, and an 88 power. These scores allow users to put a solid punch on the ball when choosing Fritz. Additionally, he has an 85 fitness, an 84 backhand, and an 80 volley. Aside from his slightly low volley ranking, Fritz seems to make an incredibly solid opinion to choose from the players included in this game. He’ll allow you to pack a punch on the ball from the baseline, and won’t fail to offer reasonable speed.
4. Hugo Gaston
Next up is Hugo Gaston, a player I actually didn’t expect to see in this game. Gaston is one of the lesser-known players on the circuit, but Matchpoint Tennis Championships still decided to include him. Although Gaston offers a fantastic fitness rating of 95, his other attributes do hinder his overall abilities in the game. He has an 82 volley, which is his second-best rating. Additionally, he offers an 80 forehand, 79 backhand, 79 power, and 75 serve. Clearly, his attributes are lower than most players in this game, but due to his young age of 21, his ratings could increase over time.
5. Hubert Hurkacz
Hubert Hurkacz is one of the most well-rounded players in this game, having ratings that range from 82 to 89. He has a great fitness rating of 89, an 88 backhand and serve, an 85 forehand, an 85 volley, and lastly an 82 power. Hurkacz has one of the higher backhand ratings in the game, so if you prefer a player with a powerful backhand, he is a strong option.
6. Nick Kyrgios
Next up is Nick Kyrgios, a player who gained a lot of popularity recently due to his unusual shenanigans at the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. Kyrgios is definitely doing something right, as his ratings are some of the best in the game. He has an incredible forehand and serve rating of 91, coupled with a 90 power. He also offers an 88 backhand rating, and an 88 fitness rating. For the volley rating, Kyrgios has an 80, but it seems as if not many players have a high volley rating in this game. Kyrgios is undoubtedly a great player for beginners, as he holds a well-rounded play style and strong attributes that will allow users to learn the basic elements of the game.
7. Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev is currently one of the best players in the world, and that is reflected by his in-game attributes. Medvedev has a 95 serve rating, which is the best in the game. If you are looking for someone with a strong serve and volley game, he might be the player for you, as he also offers an 85 volley. In addition, he offers a 90 backhand and forehand rating, a 91 fitness, and an 85 power. Medvedev is one of the strongest in the game, and all his ratings demonstrate that.
8. Kei Nishikori
Next up is a player who I don’t see much on the tour. Kei Nishikori is a strong veteran of tennis, and he is a pretty decent option to choose in the game. Nishikori ties with Gaston for the highest fitness rating of 95, meaning he won’t really get tired over the course of the match. He also packs a strong forehand rating of 91, and a 90 backhand. The rest of his attributes do decline a little bit. Nishikori has an 80 volley, 75 serves, and 80 power. For those using Nishikori, it’s best to take advantage of his strong forehand and backhand.
9. Benoît Paire
Paire is another one of those players who has attributes that don’t really match his real-life success on the tour in terms of wins and championships. He has an incredible backhand of 90 and 86 power. Also, Paire is awarded an 85 rating for serve, volley, and fitness. The lowest rating for Paire is his forehand, which comes in at 80. Although he is not a bad option to use in the game, there are players who carry a better overall game.
10. Andrey Rublev
Andrey Rublev is next up, and he has a pretty shocking set of ratings. First off, Rublev was awarded a 98 rating for his forehand, making him the top option in the game for those who love to hit on the forehand side. His forehand is coupled with a solid 92 power. Rublev won’t get too tired either as he holds an 89 fitness rating. His backhand and serve aren’t quite as impressive at 85, but these are still above average. If you do end up choosing Rublev, be sure to stay away from the net, as he has a 70 volley rating. Overall, Rublev is a great option for those who want to play from the baseline.
11. Casper Ruud
Last up from the male competitors is Casper Ruud. Ruud offers pretty good ratings, as he has a 91 forehand, 90 power, and 89 fitness. He also has an 85 serve, an 84 backhand, and an 80 volley. All in all, Ruud won’t disappoint in a match, but his forehand should be used for the most part when utilizing him in Matchpoint Tennis Championships.
