Nick Kyrgios has Singlehandedly Made Tennis Fun to Watch Again

Tennis has always been known as a gentleman’s sport. From the polo shirts to the pin-drop silence in the crowd during play, everything has always been done very proper. Over the last few years though, one player has disrupted the status quo and unapologetically been himself. And I love it. Nick Kyrgios has managed to turn me, a non-tennis fan, into someone that’s anxiously awaiting the Wimbledon Finals on July 10.

The man is a complete menace to the tennis world and the coolest part is that he doesn’t care ONE bit. Let’s just take a look at his recent performance at Wimbledon against the fourth ranked player in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas. Here’s a video that includes most of the antics between the two. With two under-hand serves and some sweet words, Kyrgios was able to frustrate Tsitsipas into completely losing his cool and making a fool out of himself. Again, I loved every minute of it. It’s not often you see tennis be played with this level of trash-talking and passion.

The feud continued off the court when Tsitsipas claimed Nick Kyrgios was a bully and had an evil side to his persona that fed off putting others down. Kyrgios’ response?

“I’m not sure how I was able to bully someone in the third round of Wimbledon. I was just playing tennis.”

Yes, you were Nick, yes you were. The match and the comments after aren’t a one-time thing though, as Kyrgios has been the bad boy in tennis for quite a well with some unforgettable instances.

Whether it’s talking to the crowd, lashing out at the judges, giving hilarious responses in interviews or playing a cheeky shot on the court, it feels like there’s never a dull moment with Nick Kyrgios. For once, a tennis player actually has a vibrant personality and it’s brilliant for the sport.

I can guarantee you’ll never see an exchange like this in the middle of a tennis game again.

The guy is a lunatic and a likable person all in one.

He’ll try anything against anyone on any stage though. Gotta give him credit for that.

And a personal favorite of mine to wrap it up. Hey, it slipped.

The craziest part of it all is that Nick Kyrgios is pretty, pretty good at tennis, too. Like really good. Like the man is in the Wimbledon Finals this Sunday type of good, albeit helped along by a Nadal injury giving the 27-year-old a free pass to the finale. Even crazier is many believe he’s never been able to reach his true potential because of his attitude problems. Although his craziness definitely plays a part, I think it’s important to realize the man doesn’t even have a coach because he would never “put that burden on someone.”

Yes, you heard that right folks. The man is just wired differently. And it’s probably why he’s never been at the very top often. But he’s been by far the greatest entertainer on the tennis court I’ve seen and given the sport he plays a breath of freshness and vibrance. Nick Kyrgios, keep doing what you’re doing and be yourself because you’ve got a fan in me.
