The Green Bay Packers are coming off three straight 13-win seasons. Head coach Matt LaFleur took over the Packers in 2019. The Packers in this time have been in a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde state. They are marvelous in the regular season, but constantly underachieve in the playoffs. In addition, the Packers lost key players in free agency this year, such as wide receiver Davante Adams and linebacker Za’Darius Smith. Even so, Green Bay still has a talented roster that is capable of winning a Super Bowl. Furthermore, with Aaron Rodgers under center, anything is possible. Will this be the Green Bay Packers’ year? These are the things to watch for as the Packers are getting ready to begin training camp.
Wide receiver is completely up for grabs. Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, and Christian Watson have the starting roles right now. However, this is not set in stone and there is no definitive wide receiver among the bunch. Randall Cobb is an old veteran with an undeniable connection with Rodgers. Amari Rodgers is a second-year wide receiver and Romeo Doubs is a rookie wide receiver. These three will be fighting for the fourth wide receiver position, as well as any starting spots that might open up.
The Packers have a weak spot at right guard. They have solid starters at center, left guard, and right tackle. They also possess first-team AP All-Pro David Bakhtiari at left tackle. The right guard position will be an important position battle throughout training camp. Royce Newman was a rookie last year that played 17 games and is listed as the starter as of now. Sean Rhyan is a third-round 2022 NFL draft pick from UCLA. He is a versatile offensive lineman that is capable of starting as a rookie, so it will be interesting to see who will start at right guard in week one.
The Green Bay Packers are loaded in their secondary. They have a good pair of safeties and an even better cornerback room. Jair Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas make up the starting cornerback group. However, the Packers are light at cornerback depth. Shemar Jean-Charles was a fifth-round draft pick in 2021. He had a small snap count last year, but he is looking for a bigger role this year. Keisean Nixon, a cornerback for the Las Vegas Raiders the past three years, has more experience, but it is his first year in the Packers system. Whoever wins the lead backup job will be imperative for the Packers this season.
Eric Stokes was a late first-round draft pick in 2021. He played fantastically in his rookie year, starting 14 games for the Packers. He only had one interception, but he had 14 pass deflections. I expect him to take a huge step forward next season. Stokes will have a breakout year and the Packers will have one of the best cornerback duo’s in the NFL. Stokes will increase his interceptions and tackles in 2022.
Christian Watson is a versatile weapon for the Packers’ offense. He was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. Packers fans have been waiting for Green Bay to draft a wide receiver in the first two rounds, as the last time Green Bay selected a wide receiver in the first two rounds was Davante Adams in 2014. Christian Watson is a 6’4” wide receiver from North Dakota State with great athleticism and speed, running a 4.36 40-yard dash at the draft combine. He can be a playmaker in the passing game, running game, and return game.
Sammy Watkins can be an effective wide receiver in fantasy. He is a bit of a journeyman at this point, and he struggles to stay healthy. However, he still has top-notch speed and is a capable deep threat. Also, with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, that raises Watkins’ ceiling significantly. Watkins is a late-round wide receiver who can have a lot of value as one of Rodgers’ main targets
