Karl-Anthony Towns agrees to four-year, $224 million supermax extension

Karl-Anthony Towns has agreed to a four-year, $224 million extension, his agent Jessica Holtz of CAA Basketball told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Holtz became the ever first female player agent to secure a max contract — securing two in one day: Devin Booker’s and Towns’.

Towns’ extension won’t begin until the year 2024-25, effectively locking him for the next six years for $295 million. The 6-foot-11 big was set to make $33.8 million this upcoming season and $36.0 million in 2023-24, per Spotrac. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the 26-year-old’s extension will begin at $50 million and increase to $62.1 million (!!) through 2027-28. Could you please give us a few bucks, Mr. Towns??

Towns’ deal joins a heavy list of max extensions inked Thursday, joining Nikola Jokic’s record-setting $270 million extension, Bradley Beal’s $251 million extension, Devin Booker’s $224 million extension and Ja Morant’s $193 million extension.

Over his seven-year career, Towns has averaged 23.2 points, 11.3 rebounds (3.0 offensive), 3.1 assists on 52.7 percent shooting from the floor, 39.7 percent from 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line — equating to an above-average true-shooting percentage of 62.4 percent. Last season, Towns posted 24.6 points, 9.8 boards, 3.6 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.0 steals on 52.9/41.0/82.2 shooting splits (64.0 TS%). He earned his third All-Star appearance and second third-team All-NBA honor, which triggered him being eligible for the supermax.

Towns had a couple flameouts this last postseason — most notably in Game’s 3 and 6 — of its first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, the second playoff series of his career. In total, he tallied 21.8 points, 108 boards on 48.8 percent shooting, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range and 86.0 percent from the free-throw line.

But now Chris Finch and Co. have a two-headed monster of Anthony Edwards and Towns to build around the next several years, hoping to potentially vault themselves into their first Western Conference Title appearance since 2003-04 and their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.
