The Angelos Family Is A Disgrace

Orioles chairman and CEO John Angelos released a statement Monday to assuage concerns about a potential relocation of the team. He writes, “As long as Fort McHenry is standing watch over the Inner Harbor, the Orioles will remain in Baltimore.”

My mother was born and raised in northeast Baltimore, attended city public schools at Eastern High School, and has worked with my father their entire lives to help the city, including by restoring the club to local ownership and preventing its relocation. For them, as for me, the Orioles will forever play at Oriole Park, and at no time ever have we contemplated anything different.

John’s brother, Louis, raised eyebrows when he filed a lawsuit on June 9th against his mother and John. Louis alleged that his brother is attempting to wrest control of the team for himself. The lawsuit states that “John intends to maintain absolute control over the Orioles — to manage, to sell, or, if he chooses, to move to Tennessee (where he has a home and where his wife’s career is headquartered) — without having to answer to anyone.” Since their father, Peter Angelos, became incapacitated after collapsing in 2017, there has reportedly been a lot of disagreement within the family about how to run the team. These grown men seem more like children fighting over a toy without daddy there to keep the peace.

Is Anyone Shocked By This?

The whole situation seems incredibly messy. But did anyone really expect better from the moribund franchise? I mean, we are talking about the people who handed Chris Davis a deal worth $160 million. They also let Dan Duquette run the team into the ground. Honestly, I’d be more surprised if we heard anything good about the family. This squabble over power seems to fit their image perfectly. Maybe they should sell. Then there might be a chance of some competent management. John hasn’t even been able to pass the bar since graduating from law school. These clowns ruined a once-proud-franchise, and they deserve to pay for it.
