It’s official. Resident Evil 4’s remake is on the way. Widely considered the pinnacle of the franchise that has yet to be truly topped, RE4 makes sense as Capcom‘s primary horror IP’s first fully-fledged PS5 title.
However, gamers will always prove to be gluttonous for content. And as a result, the announcement of the remake has provoked discussion as to what’s next on the menu. Capcom have a layered back catalogue of classic titles at their disposal going beyond their undead juggernaut, so let’s take a look at three options the Japan-based developer can consider for the future.
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 5 was perhaps the moment where fans started to turn on the Michael Bay-style action that had replaced survival horror as the series’ primary genre. But that only begs the question of how things could be better.
The beauty of Capcom’s remake approach is the reimagining of otherwise classic titles. Apply that same logic to a title that has been considered widely flawed, although still a relatively enjoyable experience, and they may renew interest in the 2009 release.
A remake would need to do what Resident Evil 2 remake did best, strip the title down and work off the bare bones, staying true to the horror that launched the franchise, to begin with.
Dino Crisis
Capcom has built Resident Evil as their premier IP, but they delivered another unforgettable experience during the PlayStation era which deserves to breathe new life. Dino Crisis took the RE formula and applied it to our prehistoric predecessors, but you could probably tell that from the title.
The argument can be made that zombies have become a very drawn-out trope in horror games, akin to sharks and their use in movies. Why not cut the saturation and give a bit of breathing time with a survival-horror game with dinosaurs stalking you?
Imagine if they took the Mr X mechanic and applied it to a T Rex, stalking you tirelessly.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
If RE4 Remake’s announcement has shown anything, it’s that there is a considerable demand for Code Veronica to get it’s flowers.
Fans have clamoured for the Dreamcast title to be remade, with calls made even prior to the announcement of Resident Evil 3’s remade model.
There does appear to be some weight to the argument when you play the two games side-by-side, as Code Veronica X has suffered the effects of time more so than even the clunky controls of 4. Code Veronica presents a glaringly obvious option and one sure to be a hit thanks to its cult-classic status.
