Can DK Metcalf Sustain Fantasy Success Without Russell Wilson?
Do you trust any of these Seattle pass catchers in fantasy football? That question was already difficult in the past when Russell Wilson was the trigger man for the offense. Drew Lock or Geno Smith is the new reality for star wide receiver DK Metcalf. Can Metcalf continue to be a reliable fantasy commodity despite Wilson leaving for the Broncos?
Metcalf, 24, is probably the biggest freak show at the position. 6-foot-4 with 4.33 speed and alien level physic. The problem for Metcalf, in reality, has been his target share. Metcalf in back to back years received 129 targets. That may sound like a lot but if you compare that number to someone like Cooper Kupp (191) it lacks in comparison.
The eye test bares this out. Too many times I’m left scratching my head on why Metcalf isn’t more involved in the offense. Seattle’s offensive coordinator Shane Waldron knows getting DK his touches is a major priority.
“With DK’s skill set, that’s something we are striving to do, is get DK his touches,” Waldron said, via Gregg Bell of The News Tribune. “Because that’s going to make us a better offense… I put that on us.”
Heading into year four, now is the time for Metcalf to really turn the corner. Deebo Samuel took that leap a year ago. It’s time for Metcalf to prove he’s the unstoppable force. Can he pull a Larry Fitzgerald and will any quarterback to fantasy success?
Do you trust Drew Lock? Do you trust Geno Smith? Maybe it doesn’t matter. I want to know the targets will be there. It sounds like Seattle is making a concerted effort to make that happen. Truthfully, I think the quarterback change damages Tyler Lockett’s stock more. All of those ad lib plays that Wilson rolls out and finds Lockett deep down the field for a big play are over.
Keep in mind, Seattle isn’t a very good football team. I know they want to establish the run but this isn’t exactly a world beating roster. They’re going to have to throw the ball to stay in games. Metcalf could easily find himself grabbing those garbage time scores to offset to loss of Wilson.
I understand passing on Metcalf but I’d be careful to do so. I still believe in the talent. If you’re in a long term league, snagging Metcalf while his stock is low prior to when Seattle finds their next quarterback isn’t the worst idea in the world?
