Buffalo Bills Hire Rex Ryan

The Buffalo Bills have hired Rex Ryan to be their next head coach. Ryan will become the 18th head coach in franchise history. The contract is for 5 years at $5.5 million per season. 49ners offensive coordinator Greg Roman is expected to become a part of the staff. The Bills expressed interest in retaining defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz but the scheme fit doesn’t entirely make sense. Rex Ryan runs the wide nine 3-4 defense while Schwartz is a 4-3 type of guy.

The excitement of remaining in the AFC East had to be a draw to Ryan. Rex is known for his bitter rivalry with Patriots coach Bill Belicheck. The one drawback to the Bills job is the absence of a franchise quarterback. Starter Kyle Orton has retired and E.J. Manuel look like a first round bust at this point. Buffalo will also be without their first round pick this year after the Sammy Watkins trade. Rex Ryan will have to make sure he finds a quarterback this year within a reasonable time table or he could find himself unemployed again. Ryan spent 6 seasons as the Jets head coach before being fired this year.
