Carson Strong Stinks, Has Bust Written All Over Him

I really wanted to like Carson Strong. I really did.

The former Nevada quarterback has a big arm and became an intriguing prospect heading into the 2022 NFL Draft. Especially in a class where no elite quarterbacks existed. Strong felt like a possible wildcard in this quarterback class. We should no longer feel that way.

The guy stinks. He’s not going to make it. The red flags are too out of control at this point to roll the dice on drafting him. In a draft full of wildcards, you’re better off taking a gamble elsewhere. I’m officially out on Carson Strong.

At Nevada, Strong was productive. In 2021, the 6-foot-4 Californian had a 36-8 TD to INT ratio. Strong even put together back to back seasons of a completion percentage over 70. Usually a really good sign entering the pros.

I put a lot of stock into the predraft process. I would say the results usually speak for themselves making projections. How do you translate playing against even competition at the Senior Bowl? How do you compare to the other quarterbacks making easy throws at the combine? It matters. Strong put together two back to back bad pre-draft performances.

It’s all in the lower half. He’s just not explosive. Strong screams Brock Osweiler. Strong screams Mike Glennon. It’s not good enough just to have a big arm anymore. Terry Bradshaw probably wouldn’t make it today. You need more than a big arm. You also need to be a twitchy athlete that can turn your offense into a well oiled machine like Kansas City.

That wasn’t a question with Josh Allen. It didn’t matter that he played in the Mountain West. He was doing things that I’d never seen before. It was hard not to be at least intrigued by Allen (unless you’re dumb). Strong didn’t do that coming from the Mountain West. He looked like a lost puppy. His Senior Bowl performance speaks for itself and not in a good way.

Maybe Strong maxes out as a back up. That his arm is good enough to become a poor man’s Joe Flacco in the league. His lower half isn’t explosive and just looks like a walking statue. No, seriously. Strong looks like he’s permanently hurt even when he’s healthy. I’m just way out. Can’t pick him.
