Tuukka Rask Officially Announces His Retirement

The Tuukka Rask comeback trail ended before it really ever began. Rask is calling it quits after just four games into his return this season. Rask suffered an injury setback and will not return to the ice. Rask officially announced his retirement today.

“Today is a day that I hoped would never come. But now that it’s here, I feel I owe it to everyone to hear it from me,” Rask wrote in a statement. “When I made the decision to have surgery on my hip last summer, I did so knowing that the road to recovery would be challenging. I also knew it was something I would have to do if I wanted to give myself a chance to play my best hockey again.

“Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the game of hockey.”

Rask, 34, spent his entire career with the Bruins. Rask won’t go down as the champion that Tim Thomas did. However, he was a damn good goalie for a long, long time. Rask won the Vezina Trophy in 2013-14 and the Jennings in 2019-2020. Rask will end his career with a lofty .921 save percentage.

Rask spent his entire career with the Bruins. The Bruins acquired Rask via trade with the Maple Leafs back in 2006. A trade that certainly worked out for the Bruins. Highway robbery you could even say.

Jeremy Swayman likely returns to the Bruins on a full time basis now with Linus Ullmark getting the normal starter load. This is why the Bruins signed Ullmark in the first place (even if it’s not really working out). They felt that Rask couldn’t be counted on this year (and they were right).
