The New York Mets Sign Max Scherzer – Continue Spending Spree

The New York Mets have signed All-Star Max Scherzer according to Jon Heyman on Twitter. Jon Morosi reported the day teams were close last night, but Heyman announced it was official Monday afternoon.

Scherzer is the first starting pitcher the team has signed after losing Noah Syndergaard. They have already signed four position players including Starling Marte in a massive deal.

This 2021 MLB Off-season has been insane with massive money being thrown around before the impending lockout, and the Mets have not been shy over the Thanksgiving weekend. The former Washington National was traded out west to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2021 deadline. Billy Eppler has not been shy with the checkbook his first month on the job.

When it was obvious the Nationals were in sell mode last year, rumors came out from Scherzer’s camp that he did not want to be traded to the Mets. Bob Nightengale clarified this on Twitter, saying that was not the entire truth. (Yes, I know the curse of Bob, but I am choosing to ignore that here)

Scherzer, now 37 years old, was looking to sign a three-year deal, and rumors were he wanted over thirty million dollars. Andy Martino of SNY tweeted that the Mets offer to Scherzer was for $42 million as Steven Cohen continues to spend big.

There are some writers at this website who think the Mets will never win with new owner Steve Cohen, but at the end of the day, money talks. If he is going to continue to spend, they will have a good chance to compete for a World Series year in and year out.

Scherzer has proven he can succeed in the biggest moments that baseball has to offer, he is clutch, motivated, and has an edge on the mound that dominates. This is the only team in the league where he is not the ace, but being second to Jacob deGrom is something I am sure he is going to be okay with.
