Peter Chiarelli Named Vice President of Hockey Operations for St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues promoted Peter Chiarelli to vice president of hockey operations on Wednesday. After working in a role as a consultant/senior advisor with St. Louis, Chiarelli takes over for Dave Taylor. Taylor was not fired, but rather shifted into a senior advisor to hockey operations position.

Chiarelli, a 57-year-old Ottawa native, moves into his first prominent position since being fired as the Edmonton Oilers general manager halfway through the ’18-‘19 NHL season. He was hired by Edmonton in April of 2015, just nine days after being fired by the Boston Bruins for the same position. Chiarelli won a Stanley Cup in Boston in ’10-’11 in a seven-game series over the Vancouver Canucks. He has been a general manager or assistant general manager for 15 NHL seasons.

The Blues are also bringing back former head coach Ken Hitchcock as a coaching consultant. Hitchcock led the Blues for six seasons from ’11-’12 to ’17-’18. He is the fourth best in NHL history in terms of head coaching wins with 849. He most famously won a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in ’98-’99 and has been the head coach of three other NHL teams.

St. Louis made the playoffs last season but were swept out of the first round by the Colorado Avalanche in four games. After living up to expectations a year ago, can they make it back to the postseason this year? They are not too far removed from their magical Stanley Cup victory in ’18-’19. Be on the lookout for St. Louis’s ’21-’22 season preview under the NHL tab on our website soon.
