James Joining Leeds United on Permanent Deal

Welsh winger Daniel James is set to join Leeds United on a permanent deal from Manchester United, as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. The deal was completed for €28 million with potential add-ons.

James joined the Red Devils in 2019 from Swansea City for a £15 million fee. The Welsh international signed a five-year deal with the club that same year, however, his departure from the club is likely due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s impending return to Old Trafford, as well as the significant depth in the attacking front.

In the 2019 winter transfer window, it was widely reported that James was close to a deal with Leeds United. The 23-year-old even appeared at Elland Road and was prepared to sign with Marcelo Bielsa’s club, but a disagreement between members of the Swansea City front office lead to the deal falling through. Despite the failures two years ago, it appears the a James-Bielsa relationship is nearly completed.

James made 49 appearances for the Red Devils and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, scoring six goals and assisting another seven. Leeds and James will face Manchester United at Elland Road on Feb. 19, 2022. With James’ departure, it appears that Edison Cavani will take the latter’s No. 21 jersey, allowing Ronaldo to reclaim the No. 7.
