Bacteria Outbreak at Duke K Academy, No Players Infected

Duke University is investigating the source of a bacteria outbreak at the K Academy, a basketball camp held every summer by coach Mike Krzyzewski and the men’s basketball team. Approximately 84 people at the camp are believed to have been infected by the bacteria Legionella, but at this time, no players were exposed. Those who were exposed have reported flu-like symptoms, including fatigue and fever.

A spokeswoman for the university said that those who were exposed to Legionella would have been infected from the period lasting between Aug. 11 and Aug. 15. Everyone is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the CDC, the bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease and around one in 10 people who contract the disease will die. Additionally, people who contract the disease are extremely unlikely to spread it to another person. This data coincides with the university’s statement that the outbreak likely occurred in the training room, and those individuals developed symptoms after they inhaled in droplets of water from the air that contained the bacteria.

Regarding the incident, Duke University said this in a press release:

“Duke infectious disease specialists have worked with federal, state and local public health officials to identify the source of the exposure, which likely occurred in a training room in the Schwartz-Butters Building. All the individuals who were exposed to the bacteria have been positively identified and have been contacted by Duke physicians.”

The K Academy is a camp for individuals who are 35 years of age or older and want to experience Duke basketball “like never before,” according to the camp’s website. K Academy participants are coached by the staff and players, compete in challenges and games all the while experiencing an inside-look at Duke basketball. The program costs $12,500.
