Cael Sanderson Is The Best Wrestling Coach In The United States
Coaching in college is such a difficult task for football and basketball coaches that have what seems like infinite scholarships. In wrestling, those opportunities are far more scarce, so keeping dominant talent coming into your program is not easy. In the last decade-plus, Cael Sanderson has reminded the wrestling world he is the best coach in the United States.
I got this idea after watching the 2020 Olympic games after all five of the wrestlers from Team USA came home with medals, there is one glaring similarity. Three of the team’s representatives all train at one place with one coach, you guessed it, Sanderson.
Penn State Wrestling
Sanderson took over in Happy Valley prior to the 2010 season and brought the best recruit in the country, David Taylor, with him. Taylor had originally committed to Iowa State, where Sanderson was the coach. When He decided to head east and take of the Big Ten Program, he assembled a team of great wrestlers from around the state and country.
They won 8 NCAA Wrestling championships from 2011 to 2019, and he has kept those wrestlers in town and training at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club (NLWC). He is building a dynasty unlike anything I have ever seen in sports before, and it has honestly been a pleasure to watch.
I almost forgot to mention that he is the most dominant wrestler himself in NCAA history, never losing a collegiate match and winning four national titles.
