USA Wrestling Tokyo 2020 Olympics Recap – 5 for 5 in Medals

While the United States once again ran away with the medal count in 2020 (2021?) Tokyo games, USA Wrestling went a perfect five for five in the Olympics with all of their men’s freestyle wrestlers coming back to the states with medals, and Vendetta has you covered with a recap.

Thomas Gilman

The 57 kg wrestler from the United States lost in round one of the 2020 tournament. But since he lost to Z. Ugeuv, the eventual champion of the weight, Gilman was able to wrestle back for a chance to go for third place. A true test of character is how someone responds after a loss, and he came all the way and earned bronze in his first Olympic experience.

Kyle Dake

Dake took down a fan favorite in Jordan Burroughs to qualify for this tournament at 74 kg, so he had tons of pressure going into his first Olympics. He won his first-round match, but like Gilman, was able to wrestle back for Bronze. He beat Frank Chamizo, the Italian superstar for the medal.

David Taylor

The “Magic Man” needed some last-second heroics to win USA’s first gold medal in the Tokyo games. David Taylor scored a takedown with under 20 seconds left in regulation with a ripped singlet to take a one-point lead which would hold for the 86 kg medal.

Kyle Snyder

I predicted a few weeks ago that Snyder would become the USA Wrestling GOAT if he won his second gold medal. That, unfortunately, did not happen as he lost round three with Sadulaev in the finals of the 97 kg bracket in Tokyo. Snyder is still young, so this will not be his last crack at #2.

Gable Steveson

The real star of the show is the young stud Gable Steveson. The 125 kg gold medalist got the attention of the entire wrestling world when he also won his match in the final seconds like Taylor. However, the Minnesota Golden Gopher won his match with .4 seconds on the clock.
