Major League Baseball and Barstool Sports have had talks regarding giving the media outlet broadcasting rights for national midweek games, originally reported by the New York Post‘s Andrew Marchand. These negotiations started recently and are ongoing.
Marchand reported that the Barstool broadcast would focus on in-game gambling, likely using their website, Instagram, and Twitter accounts to provide the games. Due to their new deal with ESPN, MLB needs a buyer for midweek games. Barstool is likely seen as a solution to MLB’s long-standing issues with marketing and connecting with younger audiences.
Last week, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said on stream that the company was in negotiations with one of the four major sports, neglecting to specify which sport:
Do you know we’re talking with major leagues? When I say major leagues, like the four major sports. Ever since we announced the Arizona Bowl, major leagues are like, ‘We can give you the rights. We can give you the rights to call one of the major four leagues games.’ Not gonna say which one. We’re looking at it.

Neither MLB or Barstool have commented to confirm the news. Major League Baseball has current broadcasting deals in place with Turner Broadcasting, ESPN, and Fox. Penn National Gaming, Barstool’s parent company, just bought Canadian betting app theScore, and now appear to be moving into broadcasting rights.
