T.J. Dillashaw Has Next in the UFC

Last night at UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Dillashaw. We witnessed one of the greatest Bantamweight fights arguably in the division’s history. What is typically an afterthought, the 135lb division is now loaded with killers, and its king has returned. Dillashaw looked incredible after a 900+ day layoff due to suspension, and I believe T.J. Dillashaw should get the next crack at the champion, either Petr Yan or Aljamain Sterling.

What Did T.J. Dillashaw Get Suspended For?

Dillashaw was suspended in 2019 for failing a drug test, having EPO in his system. EPO, or erythropoietin, is a drug that helps produce red blood cells inside your body, helping your muscles work better and help recover faster after workouts. Dillashaw opened up and admitted he knowingly took the drug and had no arguments with USADA’s decision. (United States Anti-Doping Association) T.J. took the time to have two shoulder surgeries, one of them replaced, and he recovered to work on his game. The fruits of those labors are paying off tenfold when he outpointed a worthy challenger in Cory Sandhagen.

If you have the chance, go find highlights of the fight last night. It’s clear that “ring rust” is not real, as Dillashaw looked as sharp as ever, even while being hampered with a nasty cut on his right eye and a knee injury he sustained early in the fight. The hands were there, he looked as elusive as he always was, and he looked poised to take back the title that he lost to Henry Cejudo in January of 2019 before his suspension.  Dare I say, as cliche as it will sound, he looked better than ever, and he didn’t lose a step inside the octagon.

I have no strong feelings about the fight last night, I had it 3-2 Sandhagen, but honestly, the decision going to T.J. Dillashaw is perfectly understandable for me. After over 900 days sidelined and the cut during the fight, T.J. showed the entire world that he belongs at the top of a Bantamweight Division loaded with contenders and that he is next in line for a title shot.
