Anthony Rizzo, Like Joey Gallo, Is Headed To The Bronx

Anthony Rizzo is a New York Yankee. A few hours ago, I wrote about Joey Gallo and the fallout of his trade to New York. Since that point, the Yankees front office has left little doubt about their approach to the trade deadline. Rather than for a huge bundle of prospects, the Bombers have acquired the longtime Cubs infielder for only 2 pieces from their farm system. Pitcher Alex Vizcaino and outfielder Kevin Alcantara appear to be the return according to YES Network’s Jack Curry. Brian Cashman is fearlessly going all in with this 2021 roster after a sluggish start to the season.

Now What?

Earlier, I had griped on the Yankees for acquiring yet another power hitter. However, I’m starting to warm up to this lineup with the acquisition of Rizzo. The front office clearly had a desire to address the Bronx Bombers’ left-handed-hitting situation. Both Gallo and Rizzo have high on-base percentages and could have a field day at the plate in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. Like Gallo, Rizzo is a great defensive player, with both an NL Platinum Glove and Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2016. Both Vizcaino and Alcantara are a step up from the caliber of prospects the Yanks gave up for the Rangers’ slugger. A free agent after this season, we will have to wait in order to know whether Rizzo is worth it. Many were clamoring for the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox to re-acquire the 2016 World Series Champion. Instead, Brian Cashman pulled the trigger on yet another blockbuster. The Yankees are gearing up for what hopes to be a huge next couple of months.
