Why Paul Pogba Should Stay With Manchester United

Paul Pogba Should Really Give United Another Chance

Paul Pogba has had a mixed performance in his five years since returning to Manchester United. After winning some trophies early on with Jose Mourinho, his stay in England has taken a dip. His major highlight of the past half-decade has to be his World Cup triumph with France in 2018, but after all that has gone on at the club level, the souring of his relationship with the United hierarchy is not surprising. That being said, he should not completely give up in England. Despite being one of the best upcoming free agents around, an argument could be made for him to stay, especially considering the job Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and John Murtough have done in this summer’s transfer window.

The Summer 2021 Window So Far

Manchester United has made a statement of intent through this transfer window. Solskjaer has acquired his top two targets thus far in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. Many had doubted the attractiveness of United, especially in the midst of their trophyless run. However, the news of Real Madrid and the Red Devils reaching an agreement for Varane show that the club can still pull in great players. This news should be a good sign for Pogba as well. Acquiring a supremely talented winger like Sancho and his France teammate in Varane already make this window a success. Even more encouraging is the fact that United does not look finished. Another couple of signings could result in a serious push for the 2022 Premier League title.

What Needs To Be Done

Outside of right-wing and central defense, the other main need in this squad is in defensive midfield. Solskjaer can look across town to see what kind of success this brings. For the better part of a decade, Fernandihno was a critical piece in Manchester City’s midfield. His ability to shield the defensive line and move laterally across the pitch allowed Pep Guardiola to deploy two Number 8 midfielders in David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. If United can find a similar type of player to deploy behind Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, then the Red Devils could be on the verge of a memorable run of their own. Assuring Pogba that he will have a more attacking role in Ole’s setup could be a key to convincing him to stay.

Paul Pogba should not give up on Manchester United yet. The current squad is a world-class defensive midfielder away from being a true powerhouse once again. Bringing in a national teammate is already a good strategy towards keeping the Frenchman. If United starts winning trophies once again, a Pogba departure could end up being a foolish decision.
