Another tennis player has announced that they are dropping out of the Tokyo Olympics. Matteo Berrettini has become the latest men’s player to pull out of the games. The world number 8 who would have been representing Italy at the Olympics cited a left thigh injury.
This news comes as a disappointment to all tennis fans, especially after seeing his outstanding performance in the Wimbledon tournament. Matteo made it to the final stage of Wimbledon, and despite his loss against Novak Djokovic, he definitely gained support all around the tennis world.
The 25-year-old turned to Instagram to announce, “I am extremely disappointed to announce my withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympic Games.”
“I had an MRI scan yesterday on the thigh injury I sustained during Wimbledon and was informed I will not be able to compete for a couple of weeks.”
Berrettini expressed his disappointment, “Representing Italy is the biggest honour for me so it is devastating to miss the Olympics.”
Unfortunately for Italian fans, the Italian National Olympic Committee stated they would be unable to replace Matteo on the roster for Italian men’s tennis, as the deadline to name new athletes was Friday.
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics has already seen so many brand names withdraw from the competition. Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, and Domonic Thiem all pulled out recently citing various reasons. Man, the tennis Olympics are looking really frail. On the bright side, Matteo Berrettini, being young, can expect to have more opportunities at playing in the Olympics down the line.
