Coco Gauff Out of Tokyo Olympics After Testing Positive For COVID-19

U.S. tennis player Coco Gauff has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics. Gauff announced her withdraw from the Olympics on Twitter.

“I am so disappointed to share the news that I have tested positive for COVID and won’t be able to play in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be more chances for me to make this come true in the future. I want to wish TEAM USA best of luck and a safe games for every Olympian and the entire Olympic family.”

Coco Gauff made headlines in 2019 when she became the first 15-year-old in 15 years to became top 50 in the Women’s Tennis Association. She continued to make headlines when she reached the fourth round in her first Australian Open.

After Serena Williams’s decision to opt-out of play, Gauff was set to be a top player for the U.S. Olympic tennis team. Gauff is one of the eight U.S. singles players who was set to make their debut in the Olympics. Gauff’s participation in the Olympics would have made her the second-youngest U.S. player since 2000.

Why Are Tennis Stars Opting Out Of The Olympics?

After the announcement of two other Olympic athletes that have tested positive for COVID-19, Gauff is now the third athlete to test positive.
