Minnesota Transfer Marcus Carr Commits to Texas

Texas Basketball received yet another commitment from the transfer portal earlier today as Minnesota transfer Marcus Carr joined the Longhorns. Carr played his previous two seasons of college basketball with the Golden Gophers after transferring from Pitt following his freshman year. Last season, the point guard averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game en route to First Team All-Big Ten honors. Despite Carr’s excellent play, the Golden Gophers collapsed mid-season and missed out on NCAA Tournament selection.

Texas beat out Kentucky, Kansas, and Louisville in the Marcus Carr sweepstakes. Carr was considered a top five transfer in all of college hoops entering the offseason, so this is major news for new head coach Chris Beard and the Longhorns.

Marcus Carr Elevates Texas to Preseason Top-Five Consideration

Much of Texas’ roster for the 2021-22 season has been cobbled together from the transfer portal. Guard Devin Askew transferred in from Kentucky. Forward Christian Bishop came over from Creighton. UMass transfer Tre Mitchell start at center after averaging 18 points per game last season. Three other Power Five transfers will likely see minutes as well.

Carr’s transfer gives Texas buzz as a top-five team entering next season. Our own Alex Cervantes put the Longhorns at No. 9 in his WTE Top 25 even before Marcus Carr’s commitment. After a shocking loss to 14-seed Abilene Christian in the most recent NCAA Tournament, the Texas Longhorns have reloaded and will be a major force this upcoming season.
