DeVonta Smith Could Be A Great Pick Up For 2021 Fantasy
DeVonta Smith had a historic season for Alabama in 2020 which included 23 receiving touchdowns and the Heisman Trophy. The Eagles traded up and took Smith with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, reuniting him with quarterback Jalen Hurts. With a lack of offensive firepower on this Eagles team, DeVonta Smith is a great option for 2021 fantasy.
While I like Ja’Marr Chase and Jaylen Waddle as players, I think Smith has a great opportunity to be the most productive. The Bengals already have two established receivers in Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd and while others think Joe Mixon sucks, I see him as an above-average running back in the NFL. On the other hand, the Dolphins have a plethora of offensive weapons including DeVante Parker, Myles Gaskin, Will Fuller, and Mike Gesicki. There are a ton of mouths to feed on both the Bengals and Dolphins offenses.
In the case of Smith, however, who on the Eagles team is challenging him as the number one receiver? Jalen Reagor? JJ Arcega-Whiteside? Give me a break. Smith will be the number one option on this team and the connection he already has with Hurts is something to keep an eye on. Pair that with the Eagles’ lack of an elite running back (sorry Miles Sanders), and Smith should be the go-to option for Hurts.
I do not think this Eagles team is going to be very good and I expect Philly will be competing for the number one overall pick in 2022. I wrote an article the other day on DJ Chark’s fantasy value, and in it, I mentioned that the Jags will be forced to air out the ball because they will trail in most of their games. Unlike the Jaguars, who have some capable offensive pieces, Smith is the only trustworthy weapon on the Eagles, meaning that his production will only balloon further when the Eagles struggle to stay in games and are forced to throw downfield to stay alive.
When it comes to rookie receivers, a lot of people are going to be fixated on Chase and Waddle. Smith could fall through the cracks and be a mid to late-round draft pick. Keep an eye on DeVonta Smith. I think he is tired of the criticisms and will be looking for blood in 2021.
